The door handle was originally designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1956. In the mid-1990s, a renewed interest in modernism's furniture art and Danish design arose. This gave rise to a growing demand for Arne Jacobsen's furniture and art industrial works. That is why the AJ handle is today one of the very popular door handles in the whole world.
Original handles can be ordered in the following colors
- brass and stainless steel (brushed or polished surface)
- powder coated RAL 9005 Black, RAL 9016 White, RAL 7047 Telegrey, RAL 7037 Dust gray on stainless steel
- PVD Charcoal, Gunmetal, Copper and Brass on brushed or polished stainless steel
These colors are the only ones that are described as original, there are many who process the handles themselves but these must not be marketed as original handles.
Arne Emil Jacobsen (born 11 February 1902 in Copenhagen, died 24 March 1971 in Copenhagen) was a Danish architect and designer who helped to introduce modernism in Denmark. He has an international reputation and is one of Denmark's most famous designers.
Arne Jacobsen, who was Jewish, fled to Sweden in 1943 with thousands of other Danish Jews and stayed there until the end of the war.
Today he is internationally known and recognized especially for his chairs: Syveren, Myren, Svanen, Ægget and the beautiful Arne Jacobsen Dørgreb which today is seen in many homes as you can get design at a reasonable price.
Arne Jacobsen was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where in the period 1956-1965 he taught as a professor of architecture inspired by Le Corbusier.
